In terms of lightweight and free, I’d recommend either AVG or AntiVir. Both have a free basic version with full anti-virus protection, and run in a relatively small footprint.

You should try SSuite Office for a free office suite. They have a whole range of office suites that are free for download.

Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small and efficient.

A netbook isn’t intended for power. By definition, a netbook is a "casual" computer, intended for very basic needs, basic surfing, email, looking at a few pics, etc. That’s why they’re cheap.
